WIN (What I Need)

Personalized Learning Time: What I Need

At Antioch Middle, every student receives support or enrichment daily focused on areas of specific need. The official title for this course is Personalized Learning Time, but at AMS we call it WIN—or What I Need.

Each summer, incoming students are scheduled for one of the following WIN course options based on previous academic performance:

  • Tier II, III, or Exceptional Education Intervention: For students who need support in reading or math. Each student completes a diagnostic test several times per year and receive instruction in their specific area(s) of need.

  • Language Support Intervention: For students receiving English Learner (EL) services who need support with reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

  • AVID Excel: For students receiving English Learner services who are approaching exiting the EL program and need support to develop speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.

  • Tier I: For students who have demonstrated adequate mastery of reading and math skills. This time may be used to check for course assignment completion or to study an Exploratory course topic in greater depth.

  • Enrichment/Encore: For students who have demonstrated consistent mastery of reading and math skills and who need extra challenge. This time may be used to complete requirements for some high school credit courses, such as Spanish I or to participate in Encore gifted courses.

We expect students to demonstrate significant academic progress in each WIN intervention and to move to a higher Tier over time. As such, families receive a report of their child’s growth every five weeks and are screened for overall learning three times each year (typically in September, January, and May) using NWEA MAP Reading and Math assessments and Language Live or iReady screening tools. Attendance is required for all WIN courses. Because WIN is focused on growth, these courses are ungraded.
